Every week i’d see the same ravers…at nasa in nyc, on a mountaintop in vermont, warehouse in  baltimore, boston , philly,DC and….wait for it…. long island. we were a small dedicated group-maybe 500 people the first few years from 1992-1993 . It was a radical twist in attitude and a quantum club leap to even consider leaving the island of manhattan to find better music , but we lived for the sound.  Many of my peers from the previous 80’s decade could not understand why I turned my back on house but by then i considered it cliche , formatted house music after 1993  ,opting for rave breakbeats, acid house ,anything experimental. the golden era of house music had come and left the building by 1991. many house djs had their own labels by then and were making money and were afraid to experiment with new sounds as they found their niche…and therfor refused to play this “rave music”.  Unlike europe who had a huge explosion and love for change, but stateside it was mainly  15 -20 year olds who lived for the new sound..I’d often close my eyes when dancing to transcend beyond the cold grungy concrete warehouses and a mass of tweens laying in a pile massaging each other in the corners on E. Music has the power to do that -transcend.  In the raves i was high on music and usually 1  big honey blunt would last a night-soon to be legal. contrary to popular belief  , i may have taken ecstasy only 7 or 8 times and it was usually while i was writing , recording and singing in our home studio. you see, once youv’e tried LSD and are “experienced” ..it wasn’t nessasarry for me to drop E to have fun,feel connected, or to get the energy to dance . I had already been dancing 6 hours a night approx 5 nights a week for a decade as my partner was a dj who i would  drive to and from gigs and help carry his record crates in ny’s most exciting clubs.  sundays he dj’d at dean johnson’s “rock n roll fag bar” at the world (R.I.P DEAN), monday was “nells” for the booshie-est  black clientelle with giant mobile phones,champagne, and their regular star ..Prince and his security guards on the dance floor, tuesday at MK ..where every woman wore a short black tight mini dress ( predictable and tacky straight crowd  …but i had to support my man on the dex and was always the fisrt dancer on these floors) thurdsay he spun at the legendary “redzone”, but for years prior…thursdays were his resident spot at the  world  alongside  frankie knuckles until the owners stopped paying and eventually were all murdered  by the mob as they were the mob : (   Every week we’d see  a new track act perform with the latest hit such as Paris grey from inner city singing Big Fun, Lollita holiday singing ontop of the bar at red zone, jomanda at zanzibar, bas noir at redzone, etc….we were spoiled as clublife didnt cost a thing but the clothes on your back .the mafia made for great club culture in the 80’s…when house didn’t even have a name yet and hiphop and house were always played in the same club .Once guilliani shut down the mob in 1990…the club scene seemed to die overnight..as they could no longer launder their street drug money  and street prostitution thru clubs…clubs had to all of a sudden make a profit. i love dance music as much today and never get bored deejaying all around the world. I’d still rather be touring with my band, but for the mean time deejaying is the best secondary job i could imagine. I’m reminiscing about those days not because i would like to be there again…but because the influence of this era is so influential these days in music and fashion….i just want to share a glimpse from a granny raver who was there and coherent . it’s funny how i considered myself a granny at 30 . i  occasionally get insulted  online for ‘being too old to sing or dance” but at the ripe young age of  49…i’ve never felt more beautiful, energetic, and happy to be living my life, calling the shots, chosing my gigs„weeding out starfuckery leaches, and am surrounded by kind hearted music lovers . i learned to avoid the hangars on years ago as I’m not one who  appreciates smoke blowing up my ass with BS compliments , I continue to rejoice when i find a new track to play out. I’m also glad to be singing deeelite songs again  in my set as the dancefloor demands. tonite i’ll be singing “depending”,”goodbeat”, “runaway”, and whatever strikes my fancy. - this Gif brought back memories = smeltet.gif by Hector Llanquin……lady miss kier ….www.ladykier.com…

When he bought the left leaning Village Voice in the 80’s…i knew something fishy was going on …when he and his fox news clan bought MYSPACE , I knew that would be the end of MYSPACE ….but it still seems he can’t be stopped trying to mold our opinions even when caught tapping phones for his news stories…but he can be stopped..with our help. we the people be the people…why let him buy another established and trusted newspaper to ruin ? on a personal note ..it was his rag the London sun ( equivalent to our National Enquire=BS ) that printed in 1991 that i had died from a heroin addiction. pure lies and garbage …but Seattle times and mtv news picked up the sun story without checking facts. my managers never explained to me what slander meant and i thought if i ignored it ..thinking the rumor would dissapear as  i never thought anyone could believe that about me - mainly because I can dance and sing at the same time which takes a lot of stamina and energy….and yet many people did believe it. Aids is going to lose ! there is much controversy and misinformation 30 years after it was first discovered .Back in 1982, I didn’t know how to react when my friend David told me he had ‘the gay disease” . My heart sunk, and to make matters worse, i didn’t know if I could hug him,breath the same air,and neither did he for the first few years.When we found out more…..it meant a lot to kiss our brothers on the lips to show them we were not ignorant , afraid , and refused to treat them like lepers as our govt. did. David  always smiled in public and kept his stories upbeat ,but as a 18 year old , i didn’t know how to deal with death and am ashamed to say …I don’t know how he spent his last days. I don’t know if his family were supportive of this blue haired punk rocker who was teased in his neighborhood and called  ”punkrock” to which he would reply…”no! Planetrock” with a smile and beautiful crystal blue eyes. Then he dissapeared one day and his phone was disconnected. Then , more news about more friends ,and I could not keep up with hospital visits and funerals. I am ashamed I couldn’t be there for far too many. I performed at several benefits before there were even the words HIV virus  or AIDS disease and more than a decade before this disease was mentioned by a u.s. president. I remember a relative coming to visit nyc, who ignorantly refused to eat in a chelsea restaurant for fear of catching Aids. How ashamed I am of our country for the lack of information,awareness,providing hospice care, and affordable drugs to millions who need them now. it seems we hear less about it these days, although it’s been a predominantly heterosexual disease for 20 years in the states and most other countries. If it hadn’t of been for Act-up and the movers and shakers within the LGBT community and their relentless crusade to open the eyes of the world, demand education, affordable meds,clinics, health food awareness,hospices,physical fitness explosion ( with some help from Jane Fonda) …it might still be a tabboo secret. I doubt we would have Whole foods and Trader joes popping up everywhere .  This tight nit group of men and women spread the word that “Silence is deadly” in a profoundly organized and courageous movement educating millions . We’ve come a long way and have buried many but soon AIDS and HIV will be the ones to lose this battle.  -lady miss kier …www.ladykier.com
